The ACERC mission is “to develop advanced combustion technology through fundamental engineering research and educational the programs aimed at the solution of critical national problems.”

Fuels: The fuels used at ACERC include coal, biomass, black liquor, petroleum coke, hydrogen, municipal solid waste, natural gas, jet & diesel fuel, metallurgical coke, soot/model hydrocarbons, live fuels (wild land fuels), foams

Industries: Industries that benefit from the research conducted at ACERC include those involved in electric power, chemical processes, forest products, forest service, solid waste, transportation, cement/concrete glass, and military (safety).

Subjects: The subjects that are studied include combustion/gasification; ash (formation, deposition, corrosion, use), soot/aerosol formation;  NOx , SCR; mercury emissions; heat transfer (convective, radiative); CFD, fluid/fixed beds; parallel computing.
